“A … a snake … over there …” he whispered.

Bear didn’t make any sudden moves. He followed the direction of Omar’s eyes.

Then, in the blink of an eye, Bear put his machete down and dived into the bush head first.

There was a burst of activity behind the leaves.

“Not a snake!” Bear shouted.

The branches shook and the whole bush quivered as Bear struggled with … whatever it was. He backed out of the bush, bent over, with both hands stretched out in front of him. They were wrapped around the tail of a very ugly brown and white lizard, which was the size of Omar’s arm. It twisted and turned in Bear’s hands, trying to snap at his arms while Bear held it a safe distance away from him.

“Well spotted, Omar,” Bear said, working hard to control it. “It’s a monitor lizard. Or, out here, survival food.”

He held the lizard at arm’s length with one hand, dangling it by its tail. It still tried to bite him but it couldn’t make itself twist that far.

Bear moved his hand down behind its neck, held the lizard down, grabbed the machete off the ground and swiftly dispatched it. It was all over in a second.
